وفقاً لبيانات المنظمة الدولية للهجرة، لقي 821 شخصاً حتفهم أو فُقدوا في البحر الأبيض المتوسط المركزي بين يناير ومطلع مايو 2026 وحده. كما أفادت التقارير بأن أكثر من 5,600 مهاجر اعتُرضوا وأُعيدوا قسراً إلى ليبيا منذ مطلع 2026 — وهي ممارسة تتعارض مع القانون الدولي وفق الأمم المتحدة.

كما يُحذّر الخبراء من ظاهرة "الغرق الصامت": كوارث تقع خارج ممرات الرصد لا يبقى لها أثر رسمي.

طالبت الأمم المتحدة والمنظمة الدولية للهجرة بـ:

— إرادة سياسية حقيقية من الحكومات لإنهاء الوفيات على طرق الهجرة
— توسيع المسارات الآمنة للهجرة بدلاً من القوارب المطاطة
— دعم أكبر للعائلات التي تنتظر أخبار ذويها المفقودين
— استثمار في البيانات لفهم طرق الهجرة وتصميم تدخلات فعّالة
